French Immersion Program

School boards determine if the language of instruction for students in the French Immersion program is French or English for the Grade 9 mathematics course. With the release of The Ontario Curriculum, Grade 9: Mathematics (2021), there is one curriculum for both French- and English-language schools. For this reason, the mathematics questions on the French- and the English-language assessments are now the same.

French-English and English-French Glossaries

The French-English and English-French Glossaries may assist French Immersion students completing the Grade 9 assessment. In the glossaries, students can find many common mathematics terms used in French and English according to the mathematics curriculum. During the assessment, all students can access these glossaries on the assessment platform and also use hard copies of the glossaries, which can be printed as regular- or large-print PDFs from the EQAO website.

Options for French Immersion Program Classes

Each school board will determine which option all Grade 9 mathematics classes that are identified as part of the French Immersion program will follow for the assessment:

Option A: Students complete the assessment questions in English.

Option B: Students complete the assessment questions in French.

Accessing the Sample Test on the e-Assessment Platform

The language the students in Grade 9 mathematics classes that are part of the French Immersion program will see in the e-assessment platform will depend on the option selected by the school board.

If the school board selected Option A, all content in the platform will be in English.

If the school board selected Option B, the tool exploration will be in French and when students access the Sample Test, all content, including the questions, tool bar and help pages, will be in French.

Regardless of the option selected, when all students access the e-assessment platform, they will be presented with an introduction, relaxation exercises, and strategies in English.

Accessing the Sample Test on the EQAO Website

There are two options for students to access the Sample Test on the EQAO website, depending on the French Immersion option selected by the school board.

If the school board selected Option A, students can access the Sample Test in English on the EQAO website

If the school board selected Option B, students can access the Sample Test in French on the OQRE website.

Accessing the Operational Assessment

All students must access the operational assessment through the e-assessment platform, unless they are using a printable PDF or Braille format of the alternative version.

For Grade 9 mathematics classes that are identified as part of the French Immersion program:

If the school board selected Option A, all content in the platform, and the assessment will be in English.

If the school board selected Option B, the tool exploration will be in French and when students access the assessment, all content, including the questions, tool bar and help pages, will be in French.

Regardless of the option selected by the school board, when all students access the e-assessment platform, they will be presented with an introduction, relaxation exercises, and strategies in English. The student questionnaire will also be in English.

NOTE
The language of the assessment is determined by the school board and cannot be changed at the school or student level.
